This article is about the miniseries. For the SAFE outpost, visit Outpost Rat's Nest.

Rat's Nest is a Halo-based machinima miniseries that serves as a prequel to Guard Duty, airing from June 29, 2025 until July 27, 2025. Directed by Syp The Mighty from a screenplay she wrote with Revoltge, this series centers on Emery Eden just prior to his introduction in Season 1 during an encounter with the guards stationed on Outpost Rat's Nest.

A teaser clip was included at the end of a special video announcing the cast of Nine to Five, which featured Revoltge in-character as Emery Eden sending an audition for the lead role. On May 2, 2025, the official poster illustrated by jaxbeetle was unveiled as well as its release window upon the end of filming. An official trailer was released on June 22, 2025, followed by its premiere on June 29th.

Trivia

  • This series was announced in Coming Soon, a fourth-wall breaking Sides episode produced upon the end of Classic Season 2. It was written shortly after Season 1 at the end of 2023 into early 2024. Its production was reaffirmed in Stay Tuned, another fourth-wall breaking Sides episode, where its logo was revealed as well as the involvement of animators EprothStudios and SephticMI returning from Season 1. A teaser was included in the cast announcement for Nine to Five, with its production later referenced in BIG NEWS! by including Dina Jones, a character set to be formally introduced in this miniseries.
  • This series was initially planned and largely written as part of Guard Duty Classic, with its finale being written after the decision to reboot the series with Season 1, to explain why Emery Eden destroyed it in the finale of Classic Season 1.
  • This series was largely written around the same time as Season 1, with additional writing done during that season's production.
  • Unlike Season 1, Rat's Nest was entirely pre-produced before it premiered to maintain a weekly schedule.
  • In early development, this series was set to include Dino Jones and Percy O'Hara before they were changed to Dina Jones and Polly Pockett. The pair were almost again included in its finale before being changed to Denise Rocko and Hilda Frakes.
  • Syp The Mighty considers this series to be a spiritual successor to Major Malfunction.
  • The aesthetic of this series was initially going to be Y2K-inspired before it was changed to a more western-inspired theming during the writing process.
  • Before it was written, this series was almost going to be a full series rather than just a miniseries with its characters planned to appear in a potential second season. This was quickly dropped in favor of it being a miniseries, with Syp and Revoltge wanting to prioritize the main series and instead develop Rat's Nest as a direct prequel.
