Major Malfunction is a Halo-based machinima comedy miniseries created by Syp The Mighty, Chron Aldazaar, MozzyWozzy, and LizDanceTV as Steel Lion Media. It centered on the guards stationed on Outpost High Ground as they're ambushed by an unknown attacker and are forced to flee the base. Its events transpire over the course of a single day.

Trivia

  • The title of this series comes from the question "What's your major malfunction, numbnuts?!", exclaimed by R. Lee Ermey's character Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the 1987 film Full Metal Jacket.
  • The logo for this series was designed by Corvaeraas, another member of Steel Lion Media and friend of Syp. She also voices herself in the Delayed PSA.
  • If the series had continued, there were plans for Corvaeraas and Blankslate_GG, another member of Steel Lion Media and friend of Syp, to voice their own designated characters. Due to the premature end of both the original and the Firelight iterations of the series, these characters were never introduced. Regardless, Blankslate_GG would later takeover as the voice of O'Brien for his brief appearance in the final episode of WarGames while Corvaeraas provides the voice of the Brigadier in Guard Duty.
  • While original music from Revoltge was used in this series, those tracks were originally composed for use in Guard Duty during the development of Annoyances. Due to Syp directing both series, some tunes were used in this series prior to their use in Guard Duty Classic. Syp would later use these tracks in Classic Season 2, over ten years later, as well as Guard Duty Sides.
  • After its sudden cancellation, this series was remade/rebooted as Major Malfunction II, which is considered non-canonical. This wouldn't be the first attempt at rebooting the series after its initial runs, as the third episode of II was actually considered a standalone third iteration titled Up in Smoke when it was initially produced. Other attempts never made it past writing stages, and the concept was ultimately shelved until over ten years later, when the final two episodes of WarGames would see a return for the characters and payoff the cliffhanger left by this series. This retroactively made Major Malfunction canonical to Guard Duty, which was not the intent during its production.
  • Unlike every other series, which are hosted on the Spite Box channel, individual episodes of Major Malfunction are archived on Syp's personal channel. The movie edit of this series, however, is on the Spite Box channel with every other series.
  • As director, lead writer, and co-creator, Syp retained ownership of the series after Steel Lion Media became defunct.
  • The final episode of the series, Episode 4, is entirely made up of recycled footage from WarGames and was mostly made for Syp's own amusement.
