Corporal Jack O'Brien was a soldier stationed on Outpost High Ground, voiced by Blankslate_GG. He claimed to be the head guard of his outpost upon Cayde Jasper's disappearance.

Personality

O'Brien is unserious and does not care about his coworkers, especially Linda Kelen.

Role in Plot

Events of Season 1

At the end of Machine, O'Brien dismisses the claims by Frank Collins that the latter saw a warthog on the beach of Outpost High Ground. Linda Kelen criticizes O'Brien for supposedly changing his armor to a captain's uniform in the absence of Cayde Jasper, but O'Brien dismisses this as well while Collins and Diego Jones agree with him and insisting he had always been captain.

His dead body is later seen during Overture, presumably killed by members of The Damned after eliminated Jasper earlier.

Trivia

  • A running gag throughout Major Malfunction was that he would switch his helmet but only his teammate Linda Kelen would notice.
    • This gag would returns in Machine, in which O'Brien adopts the armor and rank of his former captain with only Kelen taking notice.
  • His armor in WarGames differs from his armor in Major Malfunction, as in the latter he consistently wears a Recon chest plate with Security shoulder pads while rotating through various different helmets while in the former he appears with the CQB chest plate and Mark VI shoulder pads. This was due to series creator Syp The Mighty's desire for O'Brien to match the other head guards in Guard Duty, who have the CQB helmet/chest plate with Mark VI shoulder pads.
    • His secondary color was also changed, originally maroon in Major Malfunction before being changed to rubine for WarGames. This was simply due to Syp misremembering the color.
  • He was voiced by Chron Aldazaar in Major Malfunction before Blankslate was cast for WarGames and beyond.
  • His first name is never stated in-series, with Syp coming up with it after the release of WarGames. During the production of Major Malfunction, its creators considered his full name to be Phillip O'Brian, with the spelling of his last name changing by the time WarGames was produced.
  • It is heavily implied in Machine that O'Brien is not actually the rank of captain, simply adopting it in light of Jasper's absence.
