Captain Jack O'Brien was a soldier stationed on Outpost High Ground, voiced by Blankslate_GG. He is the head guard of his outpost.

Personality

O'Brien was an ineffective leader and wasn't respected by the soldiers working under him.

Role in Plot

Events of Season 1

At the end of Machine, O'Brien dismisses the claims by Frank Collins that the latter saw a warthog on the beach of Outpost High Ground. Linda Kelen criticizes O'Brien for supposedly changing his armor to a captain's uniform in the absence of Cayde Jasper, but O'Brien dismisses this as well while Collins and Diego Jones agree with him and insisting he had always been captain.

Events of Major Malfunction

To be added...

Events of WarGames

Immediately after switching seats with Collins after Major Malfunction: Episode 3, in the opening flashback of Ambush, O'Brien and Kelen are both shot in the head by a plasma blast. Later, in Deception, Spartan Louie Vargas and five repurposed protocol robots investigate the attack and discover O'Brien and Kelen's dead bodies before Louie is shot and killed in a similar manner.

Trivia

  • A running gag throughout Major Malfunction was that he would switch his helmet but only his teammate Linda Kelen would notice. This gag returns in Machine, the fourth episode of Guard Duty: Season 1, in which O'Brien adopts the armor of his former captain.
  • His armor in WarGames differs from his armor in Major Malfunction, as in the latter he consistently wears a Recon chest plate with Security shoulder pads while rotating through various different helmets while in the former he appears with the CQB chest plate and Mark VI shoulder pads. This was due to series creator Syp The Mighty's desire for O'Brien to match the other head guards in Guard Duty, who have the CQB helmet/chest plate with Mark VI shoulder pads.
    • His secondary color was also changed, originally maroon in Major Malfunction before being changed to rubine for WarGames. This was simply due to Syp misremembering the color. Despite this, O'Brien once again has rubine as his secondary color scheme for consistency with WarGames.
  • He was voiced by Chron Aldazaar in Major Malfunction before Blankslate_GG was cast for WarGames and Guard Duty.
  • His first name is never stated in-series, with Syp coming up with it after the release of WarGames. During the production of Major Malfunction, its creators considered his full name to be Phillip O'Brian, with the spelling of his last name changing by the time WarGames was produced.
