Season 1 is a science fiction workplace comedy series and the first season of Guard Duty post-relaunch, airing from December 22, 2023 until August 19, 2024. Directed by Syp The Mighty from a screenplay she wrote with Revoltge, this season focuses on the crew of five dysfunctional soldiers stationed on Outpost Black Out as they grow more discontent with their situation while a mysterious soldier seeks them out.

This season is an expanded remake of Classic Season 1, incorporating elements of WarGames and Classic Season 2 as a reboot of Classic altogether. The At The Movies re-release is currently in development, acting as a director's cut of the season.

Trivia

  • The entire cast of Classic Season 2 reprise their roles, now joined by Blankslate as Miller, while Classic Season 1 cast members Winter and Firesinopa return in new roles.
  • This is the first production in which Syp and Revoltge co-wrote every episode together. As such, it is also the first production to credit both Syp and Revoltge as creators, rather than just Syp.
  • This is also the first season to feature Cole Vakassian serving as series composer, taking over from Syp and Revoltge.
  • This season was predominantly written in late 2023, with subsequent additions added while filming throughout 2024.
  • During development, this season was referred to as Guard Duty Anniversary, in reference to the remakes of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, both subtitled Aniversary.
  • After the first five episodes were released, the remainder of this season was delayed due to Syp having to reinstall her computer's operating system which led to her losing her original editing software. As a result, she took the time to learn Adobe Premiere Pro for Machine and Replacement before placing the series on an unplanned hiatus due to the complicated nature of subsequent episodes.
    • The delay also gave time for composer Cole Vakassian to compose additional tracks for the season, including remasters of the tunes composed by Revoltge and Syp for Classic Season 2.
  • Originally revealed as a reimagining of Classic Season 1, this season also incorporates elements and characters of Classic Season 2 as well as WarGames all within a singular narrative. As a result, the planned sequel to this season will be a new story rather than a direct reimagining of Classic Season 2.
  • While Miller was voiced by Syp The Mighty in the first four episodes of this season, Blankslate took over the role in its fifth episode and will additionally dub over the lines for those episodes in the season's planned At The Movies re-release.
  • Syp's influences for this season include the animated series Archer and Harley Quinn, sitcoms Parks & Recreation and Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and the 2021 film The Suicide Squad. Revoltge's influences include animated series such as RWBY, Legend of Vox Machina, and Archer.
  • When first announced in Coming Soon, Syp stated this season and its Classic counterpart would be "simultaneously canon". However, this is proven untrue in the actual season as it actively contradicts its events as well as those in WarGames and its direct followup. Instead, Season 1 acts as a reset to the series continuity as a fresh start that combines elements of the entire Classic series as a singular narrative. As a result, its planned second season will tell a new story with elements of Classic Season 2 rather than directly adapt it.
