Corporal Nicole Vega is a soldier stationed on Outpost Black Out, voiced by Xanthe Folan.

Personality

Nicole is a brash, loud, and angry woman who can't stand her fellow soldiers on Outpost Black Out, including her sister June. Being very combative, she usually butts heads with her boss Miller, whom she does not respect. Her insults have no filter, and are usually directed toward her boss as well as her coworker Geff. Despite this, she has been shown to be cordial with Sarah, though seems unaware of Sarah's affection for her.

Role in Plot

Events of Season 1

While her boss Miller was chastising her coworker Sarah for not fixing his Mongoose in Wish, Nicole chose to side with Sarah and insinuated that Miller's love for the vehicle was the reason their headquarters didn't respect him. After Sarah storms off, Nicole insults Miller by calling him 'crusty' before going after Sarah. Later, in HQ, it's revealed that Nicole was convinced by Sarah to watch the Lord of the Rings film series with her as they both discuss it with Nicole's sister June Vega.

Sometime after, in Fax, she chats with Sarah while she uses the fax machine. When it breaks and Miller walks in asking about a fax from HQ, Sarah storms off as Nicole follows. As Sarah gets to the communication room and gets Geff to leave, Nicole slowly makes her way too her. Nicole then continues chatting with Sarah as the latter calls HQ requesting a fix for the busted fax machine. When the system operator tells Sarah that HQ will send a repair robot, she decides to take a rest much to Nicole's chagrin due to Nicole not wanting to talk with her sister or other coworkers. While Sarah offers Nicole to join her, she quickly backtracks and runs off to the bathroom, leaving Nicole confused.

The next day, in Machine, Geff calls out for Nicole when a robot sent by HQ attacks Miller. Nicole ends up punching the machine continuously until it deactivated, in which Miller reluctantly thanks her. Shortly after, in Replacement, Nicole reminisces about Jace Casper's transfer with Sarah and June to Geff before Miller enters to chastise them. Nicole and Miller proceed to exchange insults to one another before Sarah then asks Miller what he's done for humanity lately after he mentions his participation in "the Invasion War". Miller then storms off, much to Nicole's delight.

Later, in Dysfunction, Sarah tries to convince Nicole to read her favorite book series Warrior Cats before the pair decide to start a book club as Nicole also wants to share her own favorite book series with Sarah. Geff then enters and interrupts them by asking for Sarah's help in fixing June's recently broken helmet to which Sarah agrees. Nicole is left behind, much to her annoyance. However, upon hearing Sarah's frustration from "across the base", Nicole goes to the communications room to an upset Sarah. After being asked by Sarah, Nicole agrees to takeover the call to HQ for June's helmet but it ultimately only leads to her own frustration. As a result, Sarah decides that she and Nicole will look around the outpost for something to help with June's helmet to Nicole's surprise.

Immediately after, during Invader, Nicole accompanies Sarah in seeking out the deactivated repair robot to take its helmet to replace June's. When Sarah wasn't able to get the helmet off of, Nicole stepped in to do it for her and gave her the helmet before the two heard alarms going off around the outpost as Miller orders a meeting. At the meeting, Sarah gives June her new helmet before Miller reveals an intruder has made their way inside the outpost from downstairs. Defensively, Nicole lies and claims Geff had been guarding downstairs to which Sarah joins in. After June also agrees with their lie before arguing with Miller, Miller orders someone to call HQ to report the incident after insisting they don't respect him. Nicole swiftly rejects doing so, as does Geff, before Sarah offers and makes the call. After the call goes nowhere, Miller calls off the meeting. In Stashed, Nicole and Sarah observe Miller's large private pile of bagels in his room with Nicole expressing disbelief. Miller then enters to yell at them for entering his room, accusing the pair of eating his "defenseless" bagels to which Nicole vehemently denies while also insulting him. After a back and forth with no answers for why Miller has such a thing, Nicole claims she'll just make up a reason for it later before leaving the room with Sarah.

While Nicole and Sarah are on guard duty together, in Overture, Nicole expresses her confusion and slight annoyance about Sarah never having had Mexican food in her life. During this conversation, Miller interrupts and calls a meeting in the break room. At the meeting, Nicole learns that Geff had signed herself and her team up to supposedly become SPARTAN-IV supersoldiers much to everyone's chagrin. Nicole chastises Geff immensely for this, joined by Sarah and June for not asking them for their opinion. Miller then tells everyone that their complaints are useless and that they're becoming Spartans, leading June to storm out followed by Nicole who announces she's taking a nap to cool off.

Nicole during Infinity

Nicole first appears in Infinity, when she chides her sister June Vega along with the other guards for attempting to leave her behind upon their relocation to Cold Storage.

Upon being flown to Cold Storage by Emery Eden posing as an official pilot, she ends up locked inside of the facility's Flood containment center while investigating it in Trapped!, leading her coworker Sarah Daws to try breaking her out. Even with Geff Rodrigo's help, Sarah was unsuccessful and ended up leaving Nicole behind to attend an all-hands meeting led by head guard Mitchell Miller.

Nicole reuniting with the Black Out Guards during Reactionary

Geff and Miller observed Nicole at the start of Reactionary, without helping her, and ended up leaving her inside. Nicole would ultimately break out of the containment center herself and insult her team during a meeting for leaving her in there. At this meeting, Nicole learned of Sarah and June's encounter with Emery and is commanded by Miller to join him in seeking Emery out. When the guards re-encounter Emery in Truth, Nicole suggests jumping him before he ultimately incapacitated Miller and attacked Geff. Nicole didn't seem to mind her boss being hurt. Moments later in Dare, Emery is shot at by unknown attackers. Fearful for their own lives, Nicole and Sarah run toward cover behind a crate while June runs off somewhere else. In a rush, Nicole comes up with a plan to steal Emery's pelican and Sarah agrees to go along with it. Running past a distracted Emery, Nicole and Sarah board his pelican and fly off much to his anger. Piloted by Nicole, the duo eventually crash landed on an unknown planet. Nicole agrees to go exploring with Sarah after the realization it was alien in nature.

Relationships

Sarah

Nicole gets along really well with Sarah, and is unaware that Sarah isn't as enthusiastic about Nicole's interests as she thinks. Regardless, they stick together as shown by her following Sarah when she stormed off from Miller in Wish. In HQ it's revealed that Nicole and Sarah watched the Lord of the Rings films alone together, showing their friendship. They grow closer throughout the first season, with Sarah successfully convincing Nicole to read her favorite book series Warrior Cats and perhaps start a book club before the two were interrupted by Geff in Dysfunction. Later in the same episode, Nicole arrives as Sarah argues with HQ much to the latter's relief after she offers to clean their room.

During Invader, the two women retrieve Robot's helmet to give to June to which Nicole impresses Sarah with how much ease she had with removing said helmet. In that same episode, after someone sneaks into the outpost from the lower levels, Miller inquires about who was on guard at the time to which Nicole lies and claims it was Geff. Rather than tell the truth, Sarah joined in on the lie and also claimed it was Geff. Later, in Stashed, Nicole follows Sarah to observe Miller's bagel stash to her disgust before the two team up and laugh at Miller. While on guard together in Overture, Nicole becomes flabbergasted at the notion of Sarah never having had Mexican food in her life before the two learn of their impending reassignment.

While on patrol with June at the start of Retrograde, June asks Nicole about Sarah's whereabouts due to her always being "glued" to Nicole by the hip. Nicole explains that Sarah locked herself in her room, expressing her desire for Sarah to laugh at her jokes to which June makes fun of. Shortly after, Sarah does appear to report her findings after being on her computer all night to Nicole. While June is present, Sarah primarily maintains eye contact with Nicole and faces her more directly as well as only referring to Nicole directly during the conversation. Nicole playfully calls Sarah a nerd for being so dramatic, to which Sarah proudly thanks her for as June walks off out of annoyance. The pair then proceed to return to their room as Sarah continues on her computer while Nicole observes. After being interrupted by Geff, Sarah asks Nicole if they're going to stick together no matter what happens to which Nicole agrees by claiming she'll have Sarah's back "like glue". Later on, as they're boarding the pelican, Nicole expresses her desire to take Sarah to a food truck while Sarah bashfully tells her she appreciates the thought, indicating that they're growing romantic feelings toward one another.

June

Nicole and June are sisters, though they don't appear to share the same interests as June acts dismissive toward Nicole watching Lord of the Rings. In Replacement, June reveals that she and Nicole lived in the outer colonies to Geff after Nicole recalls a story of her getting arrested for a brawl between herself and a group of bikers while June adds that she bailed her out to Geff's surprise, indicating that they were close before their deployment. June seems to be aware

Geff

Nicole isn't impressed with Geff and is disinterested in being friends with him, despite Geff's desire for it.

Miller

Nicole does not like nor respect Miller, even insulting him to his face in Wish.

Trivia

  • She was voiced by Firesinopa in Classic Season 1 and the Sides episode Annoyances. During the production of Trapped!, Xanthe Folan was cast after Syp enjoyed her performance as Evelyn Nash in Sandguardians, debuting in Reactionary. This saw a complete shift in Nicole's characterization, becoming more brash and outspoken compared to her more reserved personality prior.
  • Nicole's last name, Vega, is revealed in the credits sequence for Dare. She shares her last name with her sister, June.
  • In her debut appearance, Nicole wears a CQB chest plate to match June in addition to her Mark VI helmet and shoulder pads. However, from Annoyances onward she wears a Mark VI chest plate. While series creator Syp The Mighty can't remember the reason for the initial change, she retained the Mark VI chest plate in Classic Season 2 as the CQB had become associated with higher ranking soldiers by that point.
  • She is a fan of the BIONICLE toyline, as shown in Heated and when she referred to Robot as a "Bionicle Reject" in Machine.
  • She is also a reader of the Warrior Cats book series, as mentioned by Sarah in Reactionary. In Dysfunction, it's shown that Sarah was the one to introduce Nicole to Warrior Cats.
  • Nicole, Sarah, and Robot are the first characters to be animated outside of the Halo 3 game engine, being featured in an animated sequence during Invader.
  • Her face was designed by JaxBeetle, a member of Spite Box who makes webcomics with Syp, for the promotional artwork celebrating the end of Season 1.
  • Nicole and June grew up in the outer colonies rather than Earth, according to June in Replacement.
  • Nicole was named after Nicole-458, a Halo-related character that appeared in the fighting video game Dead or Alive 4 in place of Halo protagonist Master Chief. Coincidentally, Nicole would be established as stronger than her fellow guards with the ability to fight as seen in the episodes Machine and Retrograde, further tying her and Nicole-458 together.
